  • 09/14/2011 - WCF with Connected Devices

Devices such as your home appliances, thermostats, rain gauges, temperature sensors, etc. are rapidly becoming connected over the Internet.  Todd Stone will discuss differences in the .NET Micro Framework (NETMF) vs the full .NET Framework and hardware requirements.  We'll walk through several demo applications where we have a WCF service running on a NETMF device and where we have a WCF client on a NETMF device.  If you know how to program in C#, then you can quickly become an embedded programmer using NETMF.

  • 08/10/2011 - ExpenseReporter: Part II - Business Objects

     Abstract:

In our ongoing series with the layered application “ExpenseReporter” we will continue by looking at the required business objects which do not map well to the database. While the latest CTP version of EntityFramework allows for the use of Enums, the layered and cross-platform nature of this application requires we handle them in a slightly different way.
We'll continue building on ExpenseReporter at future meetings using connected systems technologies (WCF, WF4, Azure, etc).
Please install SQL Server 2008 (any version) before the meeting. Here is a link for SQL Server Express 2008, which is free (http://www.microsoft.com/express/Database/).  We'll also be using Visual Studio 2010 SP1.  Here is a link for Visual C# Express 2010, which is also free (http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us/products/2010-editions/visual-csharp-express)
Bring your notebook, roll up your sleeves and get ready to code!

  • 07/13/2011 - ExpenseReporter: Part I - Entity Framework 4.1: Code First

     Abstract:

At this meeting, we’ll build an application, step-by-step, that implements the new Entity Framework Code-First release. Along the way, we’ll examine the moving parts of this framework, constructing an object model from plain “entity classes,” that enables querying, updating and inserting.  This application will be used for our database and data layer for an expense report application that we have named ExpenseReporter.

  • Pluralsight On-Demand! .NET Training Courses

I'd like to thank the folks at Pluralsight for providing an alternative to our normal monthly meeting that got canceled due to bad weather.  The 5-day free pass to the Pluralsight On-Demand! .NET Training Courses for our members was very much appreciated.  The training videos from Pluralsight are extremely top notch.  They are made by professional software developers that have been recognized by Microsoft as MVPs.

Recently Pluralsight reduced their pricing, you can get a monthly subscription for only $29.  That's extremely affordable and a whole lot of bang for the buck!  Get a subscription, increase your knowledge, and help support our sponsor.  Visit Pluralsight's website at www.pluralsight.com.

    Thanks,
    Todd

  • 02/09/2011 - Pluralsight On-Demand! .NET Training Courses

A Winter Weather Warning has been posted for tomorrow's meeting.  This month's meeting has been canceled.

Next month, Chris Koenig, our local Developer Evangelist at Microsoft will present on Windows Phone 7.  He'll talk about OData and focus on the communication stack in WP7 rather than the “normal” stuff around the Silverlight bits.

With a lot of you staying home tomorrow, I contacted Pluralsight and they have stepped forward and offered all of our existing members a FREE 5-day full trial of their Pluralsight On-Demand! .NET Training Courses (see the full list below).  I will be sending out a trial code via email to all of our members this evening.  This trial code will only work through tomorrow night (it expires Thursday morning). You will get 5 days, BUT you need to activate it by Thursday morning.  Also, please keep this trial code to yourself (do not post it online or share it) so we can can keep doing fun things like this in the future.
